Pakistan Association of New Zealand (PANZ) held Pakistan Independence Day celebrations in Auckland on 14th August 2021.

The event presented a carnival for over 2,000 persons from various walks of life. The venue was set up with a variety of stalls selling Pakistani food, arts and craft, Hina and other items from Pakistan. An exhibition showcasing Pakistani culture, calligraphy, Kashmir stall was presented at the entrance of the venue. The function area was decorated with Pakistani colours, flags and sponsors’ banners. Two big screens were placed for the guests to enjoy the programme.

The event portrayed Pakistani culture, traditions and spirit of Independence Day.

Pakistani community children had rehearsed for several weeks to prepare several items presented in the event. Each item was performed with pride, enthusiasm and showed immense love for Pakistan.

Mayor of Auckland Phil Goff, High Commissioner for Pakistan His Excellency Mr Murad Ashraf Janjua, PANZ President Mr Naveed Hamid, Minister for Diversity, Inclusion and Ethnic Communities Priyanca Radhakrishnan, Minister of Transport Hon Michael Wood, Member of Parliament Melissa Lee and Christopher Luxon, Race Relations Commissioner Mr. Meng Foon, various community leaders and several dignitaries, Pakistani and other communities’ members attended this colourful event.

National songs were played on live orchestra to welcome the guests during the initial informal part of the programme. Mrs Aysha Kauser hosted the first part of the programme. Children were given wrist bands, badges and flags which depicted national celebration. Pakistani community members, especially women and children wore Pakistani National dresses depicting many cultures of Pakistan.

The official programme started with Quran recitation by Ms. Jannat Ali Jan, and Naat-e-Rasool by Mr. Awais Ali Shah, Ms. Fajar Asif and Ms. Haniya Shahid in their beautiful voices.

Programme hosts Mrs. Eimaan Hamid and Mr. Haris Murtaza announced Pakistan and New Zealand flag hoisting. Pakistan High Commissioner and Mayor of Auckland hoisted their respective country flags with national anthems. National anthems were beautifully sung live by Pakistani children.

Kapa Haka was performed by the Te Kura Kaupapa Maoria a Rohe o Mangere Haka Group to welcome the guests at the event.

Numerous performances were played by the groups of children which includes cultural and traditional dance on medley national songs of Pakistan, an act for “To Protect and Honour”, and an act for Pakistani national heroes. All performances received huge rounds of applause from the audience. It was a delight to watch the performances live.

Number of Pakistani national songs were sung by various artists, “Apni Jan Nazar karo” by Nisar Mirza, “Sohni Darti Allah Rakey” by Jyoti Ji, “Watan Ki Matti Gawah rehna” by Tanvee, “Ye Watan tumhara hai” by Nisar Mirza, “Khayal Rakhna” by Jyoti Ji, “Jeewey Jeewey Pakistan” by Jyoti Ji & Tanvee. All these performances were prepared and presented by Flair N’ Fun. PANZ extends its gratitude for all the support it received from the managing direct of Flair N’ Fun Mr. Ali Surhio.

At the end of the programme lucky draws were held for the prizes free return tickets to Queenstown by Tarnica Travels, Gold diamond ring by Gul Law, Dinner for two at Sky City by Ashraf & Co Lawyers, and Leather Jacket by Zosack. All the winners of the draws were called on stage and were awarded with their prizes.

Event concluded with the speech and vote of thanks by PANZ President Mr Naveed Hamid. PANZ team members and volunteers were called on stage for team photo, and to receive the appreciation from the audience.
